But Love Remains

I know what it's like to lose,
To lose a father
And watch him slip away.
I know what it's like to hold your breath everyday
To cry in secret
To fall in pieces
And paint your pillow with heartbreak
I know what it is to resent your pain.
And bleed somewhere deeper than the veins
To be a walking memorial service, carrying the odour of a loved one like a stain
I know what it is to mourn for the times that never came
An arm to hold you on your wedding day
A shoulder for your son and daughter to lay

But when we leave this world
And our flesh and bones fade in the dirt
Our story will not end in the grave
Because love remains.
When the organs inside us have failed and sickness prevails
Love remains
When the smell of cologne
And their imprint on the pillow
Have started to fade
Love remains
When day turns into year and year into decade
Love remains
When the trees have fallen and their fruit decayed
But love remains
When time has withered and the sun begun to shiver
Love remains.
When the ocean has died of thirst and the wind given up its chase
But love...remains

This life is just a whisper
Our best moments only a sliver
A taste
We are more than the confines of this world
More than man, husband,
Sister, cousin or girl
our bodies are like paper waiting to be unfurled
Only eternity will reveal our true faces
And on that joyous day we will greet each other
without hands, without lips,
our only language is this:
But love remains.
